Quotes:

“This is the issue of entrepreneurship: It’s not so much the customer that’s the battle. The toughest sell of all is you selling you to yourself.” (3:01) – Blair Singer

“I see people with great ideas, but they never see the light of day. They’re very technically competent, but they can’t sell the idea.”  ( 7:29) – Blair Singer

“That’s the dream for me. It’s to blanket this planet with the best teachers, leaders, and facilitators in the world.” (20:00) – Blair Singer

Leadership and Sales with Blair Singer

“There’s no higher reward when you’re in that role of educating, than seeing the success of others that you might have played some small part in their journey.” (23:52) – Jeff Amerine

The Startup Junkie team was joined by Blair Singer, best-selling author, teacher, business consultant, trainer, and advisor. You may know him from his authorship of Rich Dad Advisor, or from his work with Singapore Airlines and L’Oreal brands. His influence has impacted droves of people, and his wisdom will forever alter the way you see business.

Like many of us, he stumbled into his roles by a combination of luck and seeking solutions to problems he was a part of. Blair had a short-lived background in sales, but that time taught him an extremely valuable lesson that flipped his world upside down. You have to learn how to sell, and you have to be honest about your resources going forward.

Blair continued to explore all types of personal development in order to find out what would help him in the marketplace, and that went from the personal sphere to the professional sphere.  Through public speaking and writing, Blair could monetize his passion for knowledge and personal development.

On our show, he even gave us a top-level look at what he wished he would have known when starting his entrepreneurial endeavor. These three keys to entrepreneurial success include:

  1. Don’t allow your ego to get in the way.

  2. Have a team.

  3. Get a mentor.

If The Ego is Knocking, Don’t Let it In

That little voice in your head that keeps you from learning or asking for help is often your ego. When entrepreneurs begin their journey, they need a certain amount of confidence to get the ball rolling. The issues arise when that confidence shuts out all outside opinions, wisdom, or humility.

Developing yourself enough to understand how your mind and ego influence your behaviors is crucial to avoid putting your ego in the driver’s seat. Blair’s entire business structure began this way as he realized that personal development directly correlated to professional success.

Make Your Dreams Work with Team Work

No matter how good an idea is, very few truly sell themselves. If you want to spend time in both the curation and marketing of your product, you will not be able to do that solo. Many entrepreneurs hold on too tightly to their idea and processes, making the hiring process almost impossible.  If you are willing to see that the pros outweigh the cons when it comes to delegating tasks, you will be able to maximize the productivity and longevity of your product or service.

The benefits of a team go beyond the efficiency of a company. Whether it is quality checking, adaptations, critiques, or encouragement, you will need voices other than your own stepping in to keep the company running long term.

Don’t Be The Smartest In the Room

Mentorship is for everyone. No matter how much you know, your years of experience, or the encouragement you receive in your expertise, you are not above mentorship. Unlike having a team, a mentor has walked your path and is on the other side of it.  Your mentor should be able to speak into your story and ask the questions your team and peers are not asking.

It can be difficult to find and maintain a relationship like this, but if you want it badly enough, you will find a way to make it work. You can never have too many people helping you achieve a goal.

There’s a shortage of leaders and teachers. A teacher must be a leader, and a leader must be a teacher as well.” (20:46) – Blair Singer

Blair Singer has a plethora of resources and materials on mastering business and sales, which you can find on his website
