Quotes

“I think that too often as we age and get older, we lose the ability to dream.  And one thing my father instilled in us was to not lose that ability.  And so, I’ve been a dreamer.”  (11:04)

“How can I use this wealth, how can I use this access, how can I use this authority and power to make the lives of people better? And if I’m not doing that, then what good am I?  Right? What value do I have?  And so for me, it is how do I use these blessings to make life better and to have an impact on their lives.  And that’s what drives me.”  (14:31)

Leveraging Your Success to Change Lives

For this week’s episode of the Startup Junkies Podcast, Robert Wallace joined Caleb Talley, Jeff Amerine, and Matthew Ward to talk about his extensive experience as an entrepreneur and what inspires his decisions.

Robert was born and raised in the housing projects of Baltimore, Maryland. His mother was a janitor, and his father was a blue-collar worker. Robert and his five brothers grew up in a tough neighborhood, and his family struggled to make ends meet.

It was common for Robert and his brothers to go to bed at night, unsure whether or not they would be able to scrounge anything together for breakfast the next morning. Often, the family would huddle together by candlelight to survive cold winter nights when Robert’s parents could not pay the utility bill.

One night, Robert talked with his parents about their situation. He knew they were doing the best they could, but it was hard to grow up this way. They told him something he would hold onto for the rest of his life: We may be struggling today, but that doesn’t mean we have to stay this way.

I think that too often as we age and get older, we lose the ability to dream. And one thing my father instilled in us was to not lose that ability. And so, I’ve been a dreamer.” (11:04)

When Robert’s older brothers went to Vietnam to serve their country, his mother struggled to handle the weight of everyday struggles that combined with worrying for her eldest boys. She turned to alcohol for an escape from the difficulties she faced every day. Fortunately, she was able to turn a corner later in life and recover.

From that day on, she inspired Robert to keep following his dreams, no matter his age. She went to university in her forties to get a degree in teaching. In her fifties, she got her master’s degree, and she earned her Ph.D. in her sixties. Robert’s mother became a famous teacher in Baltimore, and she made serious impacts on many of her students’ lives.

When Robert started his career, the inspiration he took from his parents led him to dream big. Robert spent a decade working in impressive roles for DuPont and IBM before leaving to become an entrepreneur. His parents thought he was foolish for leaving a dependable job, but Robert knew he couldn’t accomplish everything he was designed to do in the role he had been in.

After a few failed entrepreneurial attempts, Robert founded BITHGROUP, and he later went on to create BITHENERGY as well. Now, Robert uses his wealth, resources, businesses, and much more to make a difference in others’ lives – much like his mother did.

How can I use this wealth, how can I use this access, how can I use this authority and power to make the lives of people better? And if I’m not doing that, then what good am I? Right? What value do I have? And so for me, it is how do I use these blessings to make life better and to have an impact on their lives. And that’s what drives me.” (14:31)

Robert is known worldwide as an entrepreneur, author, keynote speaker, and business consultant. He has penned eight books, riding the lines between entrepreneurship, spiritual dimensions, business, and success.
